About the role:
We are looking for an experienced and passionate roastery manager to take ownership of the production operations of the business. This is an amazing opportunity for the right candidate to take ownership of a key function of a growing and innovative coffee roastery and make your mark. You will have at least 3 years’ experience as a roastery manager, production manager, head roaster, or similar role, with a broad and profound understanding of the speciality coffee industry. This role does not encompass green coffee buying.
Duties and responsibilities of this role are split into three sections:
Roastery Management:
Taking full accountability of all aspects of the roastery, as if it was your own. Ensure the safety of all employees and visitors following all policies and procedures relating to the roastery. Driving product quality through consistency of roasting and continual improvement. Manage the roastery to SALSA standards and to be always audit ready. Occasional production roasting – leading by doing. Identify opportunities for process improvement. Play an active role in developing new products and provide operational support to NPD launches. Ensure high levels of customer service.
People and Team:
Lead, mentor and develop the roastery team by engaging the team in the company strategy, regular team reviews, regular one-to-ones, and building performance through objectives and appraisals. Line manage roastery team. Set high standards and tackle under performance proactively. Be responsible for roastery staff recruitment and agency resource to meet production demand. Work with the team to develop coffee knowledge and skills. Be the “weather maker”, setting the right environment for success.
Strategy and Profitability:
Contribute to overall business strategy and annual budget process. Monthly management of all aspects of data needed to produce an accurate P&L, such as stock check etc. Having a value add and continuous improvement approach to all aspects of the roastery to drive profitability. Work closely with other stakeholders in business to improve communication. Actively engage with the wider coffee community to raise awareness of Roastworks.

Roastworks is an independent coffee roastery based in Devon focussed on making speciality coffee more accessible. Were a small team of good people, trying to do the right thing – sourcing and roasting the most characterful, sustainable, and delicious coffees on badass vintage roasting machines.
We want to show people that speciality coffee is the answer to many of the problems facing the coffee industry and we want to get more people drinking it. Now in our ninth year, and with some impressive distribution in Waitrose and Ocado - not to mention our dozens of fantastic wholesale customers - we have some exciting plans for growth and we’re looking for talented and motivated people to join us on the journey.
This is a full-time, roastery-based role.
