Summary:
We’re looking for a part-time production roaster / roastery assistant to join our team at 7 West Burrowfield, Welwyn Garden City, AL74TW.
Working hours will be three days a week (Monday - Friday), for 8 hours per day (between the hours of 8am and 6pm). For the right candidate, there is the potential for the role to increase to a full-time position (split between the roastery, a barista role at our forthcoming café, and training clients) by July 2025.
The role supports the daily operations of the coffee roasting facility. It involves production roasting on our Giesen W15A roaster, packing and labelling coffee for wholesale and retail orders, assisting with sample roasting, QC and general warehouse cleaning and maintenance, to ensure the efficient production and high quality coffee.
No previous experience in roasting coffee is required, but you need to have a desire to learn, ability to pick up new skills quickly, and an interest in speciality coffee.
Key responsibilities:
- Production roasting coffee - roasting for production to support the coffee volume needed in line with stock levels and business needs.
- Weigh, bag, and label roasted coffee accurately for distribution.
- Perform quality control checks, including cupping and sensory sessions
- Clean and maintain the roastery workspace, ensuring compliance with hygiene and safety standards.
- Assist with inventory management, including tracking green and roasted coffee stock levels.
- Support order fulfillment, including preparing wholesale and retail shipments.
- Engage with customers or visitors to the roastery, sharing knowledge about the coffee process when required.
- Training will be provided on roasting profiles and techniques as directed by the Head Roaster.
Key skills and qualifications:
- Ability to travel to/from our coffee roastery and warehouse space in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Organisation and efficiency, and ability to follow procedures accurately.
- Being comfortable working alone, and with just one or two other persons.
- Ability to undertake physical work (including supporting one other person to lift 60kg coffee sacks).
- Ability to handle repetitive tasks.
- Proof of the right to live and work in the UK.
Preferred experience:
- Experience working in a coffee shop, roastery, or food production environment.
- Basic knowledge of coffee brewing methods.
- Familiarity with roasting equipment (ideal but not required)
