We are looking for someone to join the White Whale team as our Head Barista.

***This position is eligible for employee sponsorship under the Far North Queensland Designated Area Migration Agreement (FNQ DAMA).

About the Role

We are currently looking for an energetic and highly motivated hospitality professional (barista) to join our team as Head Barista.

As our Head Barista, your focus will be to ensure each coffee is of the highest standard, leading the way in coffee preparation, efficiency, and innovation. You will be an engaging coffee educator, inspiring and motivating the next generation of baristas. You will prefer giving out stars rather than receiving them and will genuinely feel joy when the team and business are thriving. You will have years of experience to share; however, you will still love the buzz of a rush on the bar and meaningful engagement with team members and customers alike. When not working on the bar, you will be heading up QA cupping sessions or assisting with green bean buying. You will be the vital link between the General Manager and Head Roaster, providing valuable analysis and feedback. The successful candidate for this role will have a strong growth mindset with the ability to shape and continually develop this role as the business grows. This position will suit someone who is ready to give back to the industry rather than focusing on their own personal career goals.

The role will include, but is not limited to:

• Develop, train, and manage a team of baristas to create a cohesive, highly efficient, and engaged team.
• Deliver genuine and efficient service to each and every customer.
• Drive business growth by creating an outstanding hospitality experience.
• Work closely with the roasting team, heading QA cuppings, implementing recipes, and maintaining standards with a full communication feedback loop to the General Manager and Head Roaster.
• Actively assist with green bean purchasing selections.
• Be willing to carry out production roasting when needed.
• Ensure WH&S standards are maintained throughout the space.

Some key things we are looking for:

• Experience and in-depth knowledge of specialty coffee; Q-grader, barista competition, and/or roasting experience is advantageous.
• Proven leadership and team-building skills.
• A love of people and customer service.
• Strong time management and organizational skills.
• Growth mindset.

Details: - Reports to the General Manager & Business Owners - Full-time - Salary: $63,000 - $70,000 depending on experience

• Note: This position is located in Cairns, Far North Queensland, where it is hot and humid most of the year, with high rainfall. There is no public transport to our location, and 5 AM starts are required.
