Love Coffee? So do we. So our story begins in San Francisco, where our founders, Steven and Jeremy, were working. One day, they ducked into a tiny café. Inside, they were roasting fresh coffee. They watched the beans come tumbling out of the roaster: hot, fresh, aromatic. And that was that. Inspired, they threw themselves into the world of coffee, learning anything and everything they could. We have been sourcing, roasting, brewing, and enjoying it for more than 20 years. In that time, we have watched cafés spring up all over Britain, and more people fall in love with good coffee. We want to share the love with you. The smell of freshly roasted coffee lingered in the air. Based in East London, We work with smallholder farmers around the world to source high quality coffees, then roast each batch in our vintage Probat to develop their distinctive flavours. We don’t fire up the roasters until we receive your order, which means your coffee reaches you as fresh as possible. All our coffees are scored 84 and above on the SCAA’s scale – the definitive measure of coffee quality. We work directly with farmers, teaching them how to produce high quality coffee. Our sourcing principle is more than just paying a fair price, Union Direct Trade means we work in partnership with farmers to improve both quality of coffee and livelihoods, long term. Ever since Jeremy and Steven first visited producers in Guatemala, back in 2001, they realised that we had to go further than just subsidies. We focus on the quality of coffee, not quantity. Seeking a living wage for workers, not just a minimum wage. It’s a better deal for everyone, and better beans for us. It’s the only way to do coffee. This is true sustainable development. Today, Union does more than tell our farmers’ stories: we create new stories together. We work together, long-term, pooling our knowledge – on coffee varieties, harvesting techniques, sustainable farming, post-harvest processing – to create the perfect cup of coffee.
